Completed Hooker-Bassett Bedroom Set (ca. 1925)

Here are a few photos of the Hooker-Bassett bedroom set after the restoration was complete. One thing which is always striking about this kind of furniture is the contrast between the veneers. If you look back at the "before" photos you will see that this contrast was minimized with the use of a stain that was applied over the whole piece during the finishing process . One of the nice aspects of a hand applied finish is the ability to selectively stain and let the natural beauty of the wood shine out when possible.

The first three photos show the chest of drawers and the end tables (formerly a vanity) an the last two show the bed with the new Walnut side rails.

  1. John: I came across your blog entry in researching the Hooker Bassett furniture company. We found a China Cabinet (a number 6 according to the label, made by the Hooker Basset company. I was also struck by misaligned veneers that should have been exact mirror images! The drawer on this china cabinet is very similar to the drawers on your bedroom set.

The piece had been subjected to a very badly applied varnish at some point. Like you, I decided to strip all of the finishes; I then applied a simple red chestnut stain followed by a Tung Oil finish (three coats).

One interesting thing about this cabinet is the door latch. It is made of brass. An ornate, slim handle through which a hexagonal button protrudes. Pushing on the button moves a hook on the other side of the door that catches and "uncatches" something. The "something" is missing, though there are holes in the appropriate pace to have secured it originally. Have you come across such a latch? Can you tell me what the "something" is that is missing?

    Best regards, Chris Cimarusti
